Our client’s brief

The existing rear garden was quite shapeless, with a few established trees, the sloping plot falling away from the house, so that it looked weak.
We agreed that the brief should be to give the garden a great deal more impact when viewed from the house and the existing raised terrace.

Our approach

The client did not want too formal an approach so we settled on strong curves based on interlocking circles.

We were able to salvage virtually all of the 30 tonnes of spoil arising from the works to lift the rear of the garden by over 25 cm so that it immediately had more presence. We used new York stone to create the curved paths around the lawn and then cut all of the remaining stone into small setts to create a bespoke circular area.

We installed an automatic watering system with pop-up lawn sprinklers, shrub sprays and drip line. This allows the most efficient use of water, overnight, to eliminate evaporation.

Low voltage garden lighting was installed throughout the garden, a mixture of spiked up-lights and pole lights for the path edges.

At the rear of the garden, behind a deep border, we erected a visually strong, vertical plank fence and added lateral trellis to one side boundary.
The effect of the graphic lawn shape has been marred only by effects of the much-loved family dog!
In discussing the eventual planting style, we supplied images of individual plants and of beds and borders to help the clients identify their preferences. We created deep mixed borders with swathes of perennial plants. After only one season, the effect was lush, full of colour and texture, an exuberant effect in a short space of time.

We also built a log store, and in the front garden, took down and rebuilt two substantial brick piers to widen the narrow driveway entrances and ensure the use of the correct bricks.
